Statements presented in this paper are those of the author(s) and may not represent the position or opinion of the American Gear Manufacturers Association Double-flank composite inspection (DFCI) is a valuable technique that can functionally provide quality control results of test gears quickly and easily during manufacturing. However, the successful use of DFCI requires careful planning from product design, through master gear design and gage control methods in order to achieve the desired result in an application. This document explains the practical considerations in the use of doubleflank testing for the manufacturing control of spur, helical and crossed-axis helical gearing.
